Science Bowl

Syringa and Jefferson participated in a Science and Math Bowl competition at Treasure Valley Math and Science Center in Boise over the weekend.  Both teams showed off their knowledge of math and science topics and represented Caldwell well.  Thanks to the coaches and the team members who gave up their Saturday to participate in this competition.  The Regional finals for the Science and Math Bowl will be on Saturday, February 9th at Boise State University.  Syringa and Jefferson will both be sending 7th and 8th grade teams to compete with the hopes of making it to Nationals.

Future City

Syringa Middle School science students took Boise by "storm" Saturday when they competed in the 9th Annual Future City Engineering Competition   Their futuristic city, Ninja Aquatropolis, tackled the problem of storm water runoff using innovations like green roofs, porous pavement, voraxial separators and UV lights while developing renewable and green energy resources like biomass, wind and tidal power.  With the help of Caldwell School District graduate Jarom Wagoner, a city planner who works for Ada County Highway District, the advanced 8th grade science class completed a virtual city model using SIM City software and wrote an essay on storm water runoff solutions this fall.  After Winter Break, they created a 3-D scale model of their city and prepared an oral presentation which they shared with judging panels made up of local engineers and city officials.  After three hours of intensive interviews and questioning from experts, Syringa's team was awarded "Best New Team" by the competition organizers and the "Most Sustainable LEED Buildings Award" by Power Engineers of Boise.  Melyssa Ferro, their teacher and adviser is very proud of the many hours and the hard work that the nine students who attended the competition with her put into this hands-on STEM project-based learning activity.  She hopes to enter next year's 8th graders in the 10th Annual Competition.

Comments

We would love to hear from you guys that are reading our posts. We want to know what you like, and dislike. What you think we could do better, and maybe something we can add to our posts!

Robotics

Attention to those of you who are on the robotics team here at Syringa. Practices are now Thursdays, instead of Wednesdays

Slips, Slides, and Lots of Falls

Right now the weather has created some slippery messes for us to deal with. Parents, please be careful driving to school and work, watch out for kids that might be walking or riding their bikes. Students, be careful when walking or riding to school, cars can't stop quite as easily on these icy roads. So, if you pop out of nowhere, someone might be in danger. Also, be careful here at school. The black top is very slick, and I personally, have already fallen twice.

Testing

Right now at Syringa there is a lot of testing going on. Teachers are passing out post-tests from last quarter and pre-tests for this one. Students are also taking their PLATO tests, so that our teachers can see how we're doing in all of our classes. Students, be sure to get a good nights sleep and eat a hearty breakfast!

Boy's Basketball

Get excited for this years boy's basketball team at Syringa! They've started their practices and are gearing up for their first game against West on January 23. Eighth grade will bus away to show West their stuff, while the seventh grade will stay here and defend our turf! Don't forget to come and watch them play all through the season. We will keep updating their schedules on our blog and facebook!!!!

Scholarly Awards

O- Overcome adversity and obstacles
